Introducing The Furnace – Heart of the City’s first bar & restaurant

New World Trading Company announces name of their second Sheffield City Centre venue

In 2019, New World Trading Company, owners of The Botanist Sheffield, announced it was to open a second site in Sheffield City Centre as part of the much-anticipated Heart of the City scheme – but this is the first official confirmation of the new name and brand concept.

As revealed on newly installed hoardings, put up whilst the brand sparks to life inside, the newest venue is to be called The Furnace.

Whilst The Furnace name has taken inspiration from the city’s industrial spirit, there is an additional local influence behind the name. According to The Furnace team, a digital survey of over 8,000 residents helped provide a name for the new concept.

"Sheffield is famous for being an industrious city, so we’re excited to meet the hard-working local staff as we open up applications to join The Furnace family."

Nalin Seneviratne, Director – City Centre Development, Sheffield City Council: "We are delighted to see The Furnace nearly completed and look forward to it opening next month.

"It’s always wonderful to see new businesses open. It is a venue of real quality run by a much-celebrated UK operator and we’re confident it will be a strong addition to the city centre. Located a stone’s throw from HSBC and CMS’s new office development, it will undoubtedly appeal to the after-work social crowd.

"With its bespoke Sheffield brand and styling, the venue looks fantastic and I’m sure after several lockdowns over the past 12 months, the Sheffield public can’t wait to go and try it out."

Andrew Davison, Project Director, Queensberry, continued: "New World Trading Company is one of the most impressive bar operators in the UK and we are hugely excited to see them open as part of Heart of the City and help enhance the city centre’s food & drink scene. The original and Sheffield-influenced brand is a clear reflection of the confidence the operator has in Sheffield City Centre as a destination and the work that is currently taking place on the scheme.

"With Heart of the City, there is a real ambition to only introduce brands of quality. The anchor commercial tenants in HSBC and CMS have been complemented by fashion retailers Monki and Weekday, independent café Marmadukes and now The Furnace – all of which reflect our vision for a premium and diverse offer that celebrates some of the very best local independent and national brands."
